'My Mom" by the Creator of Dame Elizabeth" , Richard Bassett

She was the most compassionate heartwarming person in life. In the 1930's, my mother came from a home that preferred boys (opposed to girls), as boys would work harder...make more money for the family. Her mother had little affection for her. My mother's father passed away before she knew him. So without the burden of having, yet, another mouth to feed...my grandmother tossed my mother out at the age of 15...moving her from Cleveland, Ohio (where they originated from) to Boston, Ma. My grandmother remained very close to her sons. Never towards her daughter. Periodically my mother would visit my grandmother to show her children. My grandmother was not a very maternal woman. So, without this love that she never given to her, my mother went about creating her own family. Love was something that my mother had an abundance of, even though you would think that she would be bitter. Not so. She married a man and proceeded to have four beautiful children. But on Christmas morning 1953, while delivering presents to nearby neighbors...he was hit by a speeding car, thrown fifty feet into a field. My mother eventually went outside to see where he was. She heard him moaning. He died in her arms. My mother was, now, a 38 year old widow with four children to raise. This was 1953. Financial aid was not the same as it is now. To care for her children, she went to work in a factory. She met my father (my siblings are my half brothers and sisters), and there was an immediate attraction. He was a 45 year old bachelor who had never been married. My mother thought 'why would he form an interest in a woman with four children?' His mother thought so too and advised him against pursuing this 'instant' family'. But my mother and father were in love. Her children won him over with love and affection and soon they married...knowing that he would now have 5 people to support. You see, my mother loved him so very much...she wanted a 5th baby (me) to solidify this family. She was well into her 40's and this was virtually unheard of in the 1950's. But my father was so loving towards her own children, she risked the health hazards so my father could become a biological father. This unselfish act of love was so very indictivate of the love that my mother had to give. We, as children grew up in a normal loving home. Sadly, my oldest sister passed away from 'choking to death' when there was no one present to assist her. She was 48 years old. This same sister gave birth to her own child (all alone), once more when no help was available. All families have such tales of chaos and sorrow. Her baby lived, due to things that she instinctually did. A maternal knowing or being somewhat guided on what to do. Like my mother, my sister was a brave soul in that the life she lived. My dad passed away and my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She lived one year after the diagnoses was made. Towards the end, we four remaining children clamored by her bedside. Every want, mood, word, task...etc... was gladly and preciously attended to. Before she died, she had an epiphany...as if something from beyond gave her some 'wisdom'. She looked at us, all caring for her 24/7 making sure every loving word was said and demonstrated...never leaving her side (physically and emotionally) for a second and she said to us, "Now I know why I had children". You see, the love she possessed and so freely had given to us was returned tenfold to her and 100 times stronger, deeper ...for all eternity. I have not activated ratings on this video.
